Harkey Valley Gravel Lollipop

Harkey Valley Gravel Lollipop

This is a great gravel route from the Chickalah area that takes you toward Spring Lake, and circles back around the Carter Mountain area via the McReynolds Cemetery Road passing near Dean Reid Knob and back down Harkey Valley.  The parking spot provided is at the Old Methodist Cemetery on the Harkey Valley Road.  The route allows views of the above mentioned mountains as well as Huckleberry Mountain, Spring Mountain, Chickalah Mountain and Mt. Nebo   This route does not have a lot of traffic except for weekends during gun deer season.

Note:  The unprotected creek crossing can be avoided and the route shortened by taking the Carter Mountain Road back instead of the McReynolds Cemetery Road.

Distance: 26 miles

Climbing:  1148 Feet

Surface:  Forest roads, county roads and rural pavement.

Safety:  Road conditions depend on weather conditions.  There is a short section of rough downhill followed by a creek crossing.  This creek can be crossed within a reasonable amount of time after a rain.  Use extreme caution if the creek is running fast.
